Join Prudenterra as a Seasonal Crew Member

Job Description

Prudenterra will hire several part-time Seasonal Crew Members for 2017-2018 to help implement natural resource management on our client’s land. This is a part-time job, 0-20 hrs per week. Work will be interesting, physical, and conducted in small groups at an innovative, fast-paced start-up business. Crew Member will report to the Operations Coordinator. The ideal applicant will be willing to work on weekends and have at least one day during the week available to work at least 8 hours.

Prudenterra provides the following services to landowners:

  • Consulting services: Interpreting natural resources to landowners and providing recommendations to help them achieve their profit goals and land stewardship objectives.
  • Forest management: Thinning, burning, invasive species removal, planting, and timber sales.
  • Prairie and wetlands management: Mowing, seeding, spraying, and burning.
  • Earthworks: Streambank resloping, swales and pocket pond construction, and wetland construction.
  • Stream restoration: Assessment, design, and installations to heal dysfunctional streams
  • Agroecosystem management: Assisting farmers and landowners to improve stewardship and profitability by converting unprofitable crop ground to diverse perennials that provide ecosystem services such as biodiverse wildlife habitat, improved water quality, water storage on the land, and carbon sequestration.

Job Requirements

  • The position is variable 0-20 hours per week. Hours may be completed in half or full days (4-8 hours) as weather conditions allow.
  • This work must be completed based out of the headquarters southeast of Nevada, Iowa (20 minutes east of Ames) and implemented across Iowa at property owned by our clients.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license, able to drive own vehicle to work to commute to the business however staff often carpool or do home pickups and dropoffs.
  • Must be able to work effectively in the wide range of weather conditions known in the midwest.
  • Able to perform physically laborious tasks to complete projects on budget and to a high degree of quality.
  • Must have previous chainsaw experience, ideally greater than 100 hours. Chainsaw safety, operations, and other natural resource management certifications are a plus.  Having a general knowledge of chainsaw maintenance is also required.
  • With prescribed fire, must follow directions carefully, and execute with precision and patience.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Execute operations as defined by the Operations Coordinator.
  • Study for Pesticide Applicators License and pass examination within 60 days of start date.
  • Mix herbicides safely and apply carefully around tree/shrub seedlings, on cut stumps, trunk girdles with backpack sprayer or handheld spray bottle.
  • Use and care for small engine chainsaws of various makes and models (Stihl 192, MS193, MS261, 362, Husqvarna 346XP, etc.) in the shop at business headquarters.
  • Use and care of water pump sprayer for prescribed fire and herbicide applications.
  • Support the burn crew with various tasks as directed. S130/S190 wildland firefighter training is a plus.

Skills Required

  • Communication, interpersonal skills – works well with colleagues, and clients.
  • Punctual, dependable, organized, enjoys a dynamic routine working outside with the weather and conditions in woodlands, prairie/wetlands, and croplands.
  • Must be highly motivated, self-directed, and a highly capable person who enjoys working independently up to four hours at a time and in teams of 2-8 people.

Certifications required within 60 days of start date
Iowa Commercial Certified Pesticide Applicators’ License Core Manual as well as Forest Pest Add-on

Compensation

Commensurate with experience, but typically this position starts at an hourly pay rate of $8.50 per hour. After 90-day training period, the employee has the potential to earn between $9 and $10.50 per hour depending on quality of work and other performance-based evaluation metrics. Track and report own hours to Operations Coordinator.

Mileage

Commuting miles to the headquarters are not reimbursed. However, mileage on your personal vehicle driving to a job site is reimbursed at the mileage rate. See Employee Orientation documents for more details.

Workers’ Compensation Insurance is provided in the event of a work-related injury or accident. This is a part-time position and does not provide paid time off, paid holidays, medical insurance, or retirement benefits at this time.
